The Ancient and the old

The tired fire now burning, last embers send their glow

Warm faces smiles remembering, those thoughts of long ago

Carols in church at Christmas, the purple heathered spring

The joy of summer evenings, when heíd hear his Vincent sing

Each one a different story, each worth a lifetimes gold

Just like the fire now dying, the ancient and the old

They walked their secret footpaths, they drove down lovers lanes

They talk about the good times, when will they be back again

Each one a different story, each worth a lifetimes gold

Just like the fire now dying, the ancient and the old

This room now seems so quiet, maybe itís time thatís stopped

Thoughts turn to friends remaining, will that final pin soon drop

Each one a different story, each worth a lifetimes gold

Just like the fire now dying, the ancient and the old

There have been good and bad days, there has been peace and war

The mist of memory questions, was it all worth fighting for?

Each one a different story, each worth a lifetimes gold

Just like the fire now dying, the ancient and the old

Each one a different story, each worth a lifetimes gold

Just like the fire now dying, the ancient and the old

Australia

I remember the days when we stood by the sea,

Eyes on horizons for lands where weíd be

Living our lives, wild and free

Not  knowing where it would end.

Five short years later and I got my way

For stealiní and robbing I heard the judge say

For 20 long years youíll be sent far away

So wave goodbye to your friends.

Fair the well, fair thee well, for itís off in Australia Iíll dwell

Theyíll be acres of land and life will be grand~

More for me than a dank prison cell.

But when I arrived it was not what Iíd seemed

The sun it was bright and the land it was green

But I was in shackles, forbidden to roam

The only thoughts wanderiní were thoughts of my home

Back in the village my friends settled down,

Some took the kings shilling, some took to the plough

Some stayed in the country, some moved to the town

And I was hardly missed.

And now I look back through the tears of remorse

Just a young fella that took the wrong course

With my head in my hands I can se with remiss

I swapped rings on my fingers for rings on my wrists.

Fair the well, fair thee well, for itís off in Australia Iíll dwell

Theyíll be acres of land and life will be grand~

More for me than a dank prison cell.

  Waiting for the boats

It s nearly half past ten and here we go again

Sitting in the kitchen, with the kettle for a friend

Only one more hour and weíre down to meet the men

Weíre waiting for the boats to come on home

Here on starry nights, we come to catch a sight

Of boats returning homeward and the distant twinkling lights

The sound of engines throbbing brings forth faces of delight

From the folks who greet the boats that come on home

Believe me, itís such a sight to see

All the generations from 1-93

The village is deserted as we all go to the quay

Waiting for the boats to come on home

There on the horizon, the first lantern appears

The rest are quickly following, arrival now is near

Tonight thereís only happiness, thereís no need for fear

The sea has brought the boats to come home

Believe me, itís such a sight to see

All the generations from 1-93

The village is deserted as we all go to the quay

Waiting for the boats to come on home

You

All thatís left here in this room, is the smell of your perfume

Itís now five days since you left here

And what weíd all like to know, was your journey fast or slow

And did you ever get there

If you find youíve got the time maybe you could  a line

Or maybe even phone

Cos it just canít be much fun out there where there is no one

And you are on your own

But just around the bend is a harbour called your friends

And itís waiting there if you should care to call

And when youíve had your stay say goodbye with just a wave

Weíll be here for you if you should take a fall

Troubles come and troubles go itís the only thing I know

Just keep on baling out

You wonít sink beneath the tide you will reach the other side

Even when no ones about

But just around the bend is a harbour called your friends

And itís waiting there if you should care to call

And when youíve had your stay say goodbye with just a wave

Weíll be here for you if you should take a fall

Days around all feel the same then someone calls your name

And the light comes shining in

Bathe yourself within the glow someone out there wants to know

Whatever happens you can win

Cos just around the bend is a harbour called your friends

And itís waiting there if you should ever yearn

And when youíve had your stay say goodbye with just a wave

Weíll be here for you  whenever you return

When the curtain falls

While youíre sitting on your own, itís time to think of whatís been done

Outside you door the setting sun, and soon he curtain falls.

Youíve climbed those hills, those valleys plumbed

Emotions oceans you have swum

Lifeís knotted problems, youíve undone, with some revealing jewels.

]

Through the maze you searched for truth,

Step by step, discarded youth

Tried all those forbidden fruits

And soon the curtain falls.

Take stock now of where youíve been, roads youíve travelled, sights youíve seen

In your mind survey the scene, for soon the curtain falls.

Before lights dim for the final time, itís time to decorate your mind

With all bright things, both good and kind

That built your lifeís strong walls.

For some the journey has been tough, for others not achieved enough.

For those who never found true love, too soon the curtain falls.
